It also did a good job of making weapons feel powerful and effective out of the gate. Returnal kept me hooked with the mystery of its story, and by its system of shortcuts meaning I could get back to the biome I was progressing through relatively quickly after each death, rather than having to slog through the entirety of the first biome each time. It made fun builds consistently achievable rather than a rare blessing of RNGesus. I also enjoyed the level of choice it gave me in which abilities and upgrades to pursue. Hades kept me hooked by offering new dialogue every run and a steady stream of unlocks, as well as having a fairly smooth and satisfying opening act, which I didn't mind repeating. Of the four roguelites they mentioned in the post as comparisons, I loved two and bounced off the other two. While I would certainly prefer the soulslike I originally thought it was to a roguelite, the last couple years have taught me that I shouldn't dismiss roguelites out of hand.
